The Project
Adina Hall Design was hired to reimagine a family’s lower level floor. We began by rethinking the layout and making impactful adjustments, such as removing an inefficient closet to create a state-of-the-art Parent Recharge Station (home bar), enlarging the guest bedroom for better circulation around a queen-sized bed, eliminating the Jack and Jill bathroom setup, and adding built-ins for maximizing toy and book storage while creating a media center for the TV.
Next, we prioritized updating the staircase and bathroom to meet code requirements and enhance their functionality. The narrow staircase felt dark, so we introduced a slat wall to increase light flow and add an architectural element.
The Client
Our young family with two young boys were ready to make a big transformation to their drab basement, to create an enjoyable area where the whole family could convene. Their main request was adding in storage for the kids growing Lego and Brio collection, books and toys, a TV Media Room where the whole family could gather for movie-night, a larger bedroom that could be used by the grandparents, an inviting guest bathroom. The Parent's Recharge Station a.k.a. the wet bar for entertaining was our addition to their program. We insisted and they graciously accepted this gorgeous bar which took place of an unusable dead area of the floor plan.
Inspiration and Our Approach
The family’s contemporary minimalist aesthetic guided our design, utilizing a black and white palette as a neutral backdrop for colorful toys. We also drew inspiration from Corbusier's Ronchamp Chapelle and added three vibrant colors—orange, blue, and green—to the deep window niches, creating playful beams of light that filter into the space.
Now, the lower level is the family's favorite hangout, serving as a welcoming haven as they prepare for the first-floor design implementation.
