Castaway
An Oceanfront Residence
Clearwater, Florida
This ocean-front family vacation retreat overlooks the beach on one side and the harbor on the other, capturing the most stunning sunset views imaginable. Our design intent was to let the views take center-stage, yet compliment them by creating an interior design that feels like an extension of the oceanfront. We brought in the sandy tones of the beach through the use of white-washed wood veneers and wood-look porcelain tile flooring which was chosen for cleanability and durability, as this oceanfront pad will be used by several grandkids. We installed the tile in an unconventional fashion, switching out the direction so that you are always "walking along the plank" towards the best vistas in the space. We love the patterning that this move created on the floor, adding an unexpected element to the flooring design.
The dining room design is a nod towards the couple's engagement in Santorini, with images printed on canvas that were taking by the couple on their special day.
We spent a lot of time finding the perfect "Santorini blue" to use as a backdrop in the Master Bedroom, to bring their story to life in these common areas and we landed on Benjamin Moore's Finley Blue CW-620 as the perfect match.
The millwork is made of Treefrog veneers, one of our favorite materials for custom cabinetry. Treefrog marries the beauty of natural veneer with the durability of laminate.
We wanted the bathrooms to have a soothing spa-like feel and carried the natural textures and sandy tones through the designs, using texture and lighting to create visual interest.
The kids’ room is where we deviated from the neutral colors, as the family wanted to create a fun, vibrant and durable design for the kids to enjoy.
We gave the guest bedroom a tropical feel, with the palm leaf fan and the abstract palm leaf rug, accented by the organic wood night stands.
Overall, we kept the color-scheme light and bright, drawing inspiration from the sand and ocean tones, and incorporated strategic punches of color to bring life and vibrancy for the perfect vacation home atmosphere.
